Over 50,000 people globally have signed a petition addressed to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen under the banner “Free Paul Watson.”

The petition calls on the Prime Minister to secure the release of Paul Watson, who is currently in custody in Nuuk until August 15. Japan has requested Denmark to extradite him.

Seventy-three politicians from ten European countries have formally urged Mette Frederiksen to release Watson unconditionally.

Contrarily, Faroese politician and member of the Danish Parliament, Sjúrður Skaale, asserts a different perspective. He has firmly stated that Watson should be treated as the criminal he is, arguing that releasing him would be “utterly absurd.” Skaale expressed his views in a press release sent to Danish media, though he did not comment on whether Watson should be extradited to Japan.

“Denmark is a rule-of-law society and therefore cannot release a criminal,” emphasized Sjúrður Skaale.
