A report by Yle says a proposed share savings account for every newborn could cost the state up to about 400 million euros over 18 years.

The Ministry of Finance has completed a report examining options for a model in which the state would make an initial investment of 300 euros for every newborn.

The initial investment would cost the state more than 20 million euros at most in the first year. For the full 18-year period, the cost could reach about 400 million euros.

The investment could grow to around 1,000 euros for the beneficiary over 18 years. It could not be withdrawn before the beneficiary reached adulthood.

The report on a share savings account for newborns is included in the current government programme.
