A boat was close to breaking free in the harbour at Skagaströnd shortly before midnight yesterday, prompting a call for help from the rescue team Strandar, mbl.is reported.
The team helped secure the boat. Jón Þór Víglundsson, an information officer for Landsbjörg, said the evening was otherwise quiet and that he knew of no other calls to rescue teams during the night.
He said warnings about the storm appeared to have reached residents and tourists, who avoided unnecessary travel. Information for foreign visitors was shared through the usual channels, including the SafeTravel website and app and cooperation with the tourism industry.
Víglundsson cautioned against concluding that the warnings were unnecessary because there were few calls for assistance. He pointed to substantial damage in Siglufjörður and said people should continue to heed weather warnings. The low number of calls may simply mean people stayed home and followed the advice, he said.
