Concerns have long been raised about the impact of melting Greenlandic glaciers on the North Atlantic Gulf Stream, which influences the relatively mild winter climate in the Faroe Islands. Recent research conducted by scholars at Utrecht University in the Netherlands indicates that the Gulf Stream is weakening and may be in jeopardy of shutting down as early as the 2030s. This change would significantly alter the weather patterns in the Faroe Islands and across Northern Europe.

However, this research appears to conflict with findings from the Faroe Islands Marine Research Institute. Karin Margreta Húsgarð Larsen, the deputy director of the institute, stated that they have not observed any evidence of a reduction in the ocean current. The institute has been measuring currents for the past three decades.
