The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, expressed concerns about societal polarization, emphasizing its effect on the mental and social health of the nation. In a morning interview, she highlighted that divisive trends observed in neighboring countries are detrimental to communities.

Having assumed office just a few days prior, one of Halla’s first actions was to participate in the National Festival in Vestmannaeyjar and the Youth National Championship in Borgarnes during the recent holiday weekend. In her interview, she underscored the urgency of addressing division and fragmentation within society. “We see from examples in surrounding countries that polarization and division do not benefit us,” she stated.

Halla believes the president has a crucial role in uniting people, adding that despite the many positive aspects in Iceland, the nation’s mental health is not at a desirable level. “Our social health is also not as good as it should be, making it difficult to communicate and collaborate,” she noted. Halla is committed to prioritizing this issue, emphasizing that meaningful accomplishments cannot be achieved alone. “I have said and continue to say that the president, or anyone else, accomplishes nothing significant on their own,” she remarked.

This dedication to addressing societal challenges marks Halla’s early days in office, as she strives to foster unity and improve the wellbeing of the Icelandic population.
