In 2022, the Faroe Islands used 7,000 tons more oil compared to the previous year, according to statistics from the National Statistics Office. The total oil consumption reached 301,000 tons in 2022, marking a two percent increase.
As a result, carbon dioxide emissions also rose last year, as stated by Sigurð í Jákupsstovu, director of the Environment Agency. The industrial sector was a significant contributor, using 8,289 tons more oil in 2023 compared to 2022.
The utilities company SEV consumed an additional 4,000 tons, while fishing vessels registered an increase of nearly 1,000 tons. In contrast, other ships decreased their oil usage by approximately 1,200 tons, according to the data from the National Statistics Office.
Additionally, road vehicles also reduced their oil consumption, using 1,250 tons less in 2022. The most significant drop was seen in the household and community sector, which experienced a reduction of around 3,000 tons.
The statistics indicate that oil consumption was unusually high in 2021, except in the industrial sector, where it was 5,600 tons lower than in 2020.
