Strange sound replaces Jyväskylä’s traditional evening fanfare

A strange sound was heard in Jyväskylä on Saturday and Sunday at the time when the city’s traditional Harju evening fanfare normally plays, Yle reports.

Resident Tarja Pasanen heard the noise at 8pm on Saturday while sitting in her living room with the balcony door open.

“I thought that something was wrong. It sounds absolutely horrible,” Pasanen said.

The Harju evening fanfare is a trumpet recording played from the top of Vesilinna, a tower on Harju ridge, every summer evening. The same unusual sound was heard on Sunday, when Pasanen recorded it on video.

Jyväskylä city officials said on Monday morning that they did not yet know what had been playing. The city is investigating the matter.

Pasanen, who lives in the Nisula district, said she considers the evening fanfare a beautiful tradition. The weekend sound, however, reminded her of a drone.

“It is wartime now, and drones are flying in southern Finland. In that sense, the sound was frightening,” she said.
