Fredericia buses have replaced an advertisement showing three vibrators after it sparked debate over what is appropriate to advertise in public spaces, DR reports.

The advert featured the words “100 per cent orgasm guarantee”. Some people said the image was inappropriate and crossed a line.

“Those who want to see such things can seek them out themselves. They should not have to see them in the city streets on our buses, which are also paid for by the municipality and free to use,” said Palle Dahl, a Fredericia city council member for the Denmark Democrats.

Others said vibrator advertising was normal and not a problem.

Amina Jenayah, Sinful’s self-described intimacy expert, said the advert was not inappropriate.

“There is a great deal we need to talk about. There is enormous room for development in how we relate to pleasure, our bodies and each other, and how we relate to sex and sexuality. We need to bring it down to a level where it is not so frightening,” she said.

The vibrator advert ran on the backs of buses during the summer. It has now been replaced by another Sinful advert showing a woman with melting ice cream and the words “Make summer more Sinful”.

Henrik Sørensen, director of Out of Home Media, which sells advertising on buses for local bus operators including those in Fredericia, described the new advert as “a little less provocative”.

The vibrator advert also ran on buses elsewhere in Denmark, including in Aalborg. Fredericia is the only place where it has been replaced.
