ZBC in Slagelse is using a summer cooking course to spark young people’s interest in its chef and waiter training, DR reports. Twenty-two children and teenagers aged 10 to 17 are spending a week cooking and serving food for one another.

The participants are taking part in the Gå til Masterchef course, where they are preparing dishes including Croque Monsieur, a French version of the toasted sandwich, as well as mornay sauce.

During the week, they are also learning to flambé Crêpes Suzette, mix alcohol-free mocktails and create formal table settings.

The course is intended to encourage interest in cooking and serving, with the hope that some participants will later apply for the chef and waiter programme at the school.

“We would like more students to come by and develop this curiosity about food,” said Clara Leblanc, a trained chef from ZBC who teaches the course.

For the participants, the course is also an opportunity to spend time together during the summer holiday. Fifteen-year-old Christian Lund Norbjerg said cooking with friends was a good way to enjoy the holiday.

Leblanc said the young people should also be free simply to enjoy the food and the company. “Food is a big part of our lives, and cooking should be fun, so you can also use it at home,” she said.

The week will end with a final event on Friday, when the participants will receive diplomas and medals.
