Low pressure brings heavy rain and thunderstorms to Norway

A low pressure system is moving towards Norway, bringing rain and thunderstorms across much of the country in the coming days, Dagbladet reports. Western Norway is expected to receive the most rain.

“It will not be especially fine weather for anyone this week,” on duty meteorologist Ingrid Bentsen told Dagbladet.

The heaviest rainfall is expected from Tuesday evening through Thursday evening. There may also be lightning and thunder on Wednesday and Thursday, while temperatures are forecast to reach around 20 degrees in the middle of the week.

Western Norway and Northern Norway have already had a wet July, and the start of August is expected to remain unsettled. The low pressure system moving from Scotland towards Norway is bringing precipitation and thunderstorms across the country.

“The whole country will get quite a lot of rain in the coming days, but Western Norway may get the most. People there will have to make the most of the brief dry spells,” Bentsen said.

Friday currently appears likely to be the driest day before the rain returns towards the end of the weekend.

One fine day in the north

Rain, wind and low temperatures have affected parts of Northern Norway this summer. Bentsen said the region would soon get one day of better weather.

Wednesday is expected to bring sunshine and temperatures of up to 20 degrees in Nordland. The fair weather will then move towards Troms and eventually Finnmark.

The improvement will be short-lived. Rain is expected to return to Troms and Finnmark from Thursday afternoon and continue into Friday.

Best conditions in southern Norway

Southern and Eastern Norway are expected to be less affected by the low pressure system and will mainly have a dry week. Periods of rain, as well as lightning and thunder on Wednesday and Thursday, are still possible.

Temperatures of around 20 degrees and mostly dry conditions are expected towards the weekend, Bentsen said.

No warnings have so far been issued for torrential rain or lightning anywhere in the country, but the situation is being assessed continuously.
