Boy dies after van collision in Ås

A boy of early primary school age died on Monday after being hit by a van in a residential area in Ås, Akershus, Dagbladet reports. The driver does not admit criminal guilt.

The boy was cycling home from SFO, an after-school programme, when he was hit on Monday afternoon.

“Police have now formed a preliminary picture of what happened. We are still at an early stage of the investigation and are carrying out the necessary examinations to establish as complete a picture as possible,” prosecuting officer Bettina Bakken told Dagbladet.

She said the boy was cycling on a road when he was hit. She did not provide further details because several investigative steps remain.

The van driver, an adult man, has been charged under Section 281 of the Penal Code, concerning causing death, and Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act, concerning reckless conduct in traffic.

“He has not admitted criminal guilt. He is dealing with what happened and is cooperating,” Bakken said.

The man has not yet been assigned a defence lawyer.

Police have information that there were some witnesses to the incident, Bakken said, adding that the investigation would seek to establish more. She did not say whether the boy was cycling alone or with others.
