Havnin, a subsidiary of Varðin and Eysturkommuna, has received environmental approval from the Environment Agency for its plans at Tjørnunes, located north of the village of Undir Gøtueiði.

The environmental impact assessment conducted by the company and the municipality has also been approved.

On April 24, 2023, the limited company, a subsidiary of Varðin, in collaboration with Eysturkommuna, intends to construct a 30,000 square meter harbor pier at Tjørnunes.

The environmental assessment indicates that there are no habitats deemed rare for the Faroe Islands or the surrounding area where the harbor will be located. However, it is noted that the area near Kvørnina, immediately south of Tjørnunes, is considered worthy of preservation due to its beauty, recreational value, and potential use for leisure activities, as there are no similar areas nearby.

In light of increased traffic, the impact of additional congestion along the Kvørnina was evaluated. It is estimated that if traffic along that route reaches a peak of four-quarters of vessels, the impact will be extremely limited and significantly less than the natural variations caused by wind and weather.

The assessment concludes that the harbor construction will not adversely affect wildlife or archaeological sites in the surrounding area.

The gravel for the project will come from the frozen tunnels at Undir Gøtueiði, which are also planned by the company on April 24, 2023.

Decisions by the Environment Agency can be appealed to the Minister of the Environment no later than August 30, with the right to appeal granted to those who are directly and personally affected by the decisions.
