As late summer arrives, major life decisions such as divorces and job changes typically become more common, SVT reports. Psychologist Maria Farm says people should be careful not to make such decisions too hastily after their holidays.

Time off can prompt people to reflect on major questions in life. During the holiday, they have more time alone and with a partner, rather than being occupied by work or studies.

“When we have time off, we may come into contact with our own dreams, instead of only putting out fires,” Farm says.

Farm recommends keeping three points in mind as everyday life resumes: the HALT rule, setting aside active time for reflection and avoiding overinterpreting the transition back to routine.

“Try to take one day at a time, and remember that we often exaggerate how difficult something will be when we think about it in advance,” she says.
