Denmark compensates nine children for severe Covid-19 vaccine side effects

Nine children in Denmark who suffered serious side effects from Covid-19 vaccines have been awarded a total of 3.18 million kroner in compensation, according to figures from the Danish Patient Compensation Association obtained by DR and Berlingske.

The children, aged between 5 and 17 at the time of vaccination, experienced conditions including chronic hives, inflammation of the heart lining and muscle, central nervous system inflammation, and brain inflammation.

Karen-Inger Bast, director of the Patient Compensation Association, said the payouts aim to conclude the patients’ cases, though she acknowledged that compensation cannot undo the harm suffered.

More than 510,000 children aged 5 to 17 received at least one Covid-19 vaccine dose in Denmark during 2021 and 2022, per Statistics Denmark data cited by DR. Of 78 compensation claims filed by vaccinated children, nine were approved, 67 rejected, and one remains pending.

The Danish Health Authority, which recommended childhood vaccination, stated its goal was to control the epidemic and prevent severe illness and death, particularly among the elderly and vulnerable. The authority said it takes side effects “very seriously” and continuously assesses vaccination programs.
