Finnish consumers’ confidence in their personal finances remains weak, with persistent fears of unemployment keeping spending cautious and delaying major purchases such as homes or cars, according to an analysis by Yle’s economics reporter Antti Parviala.

Statistics Finland’s latest consumer confidence survey, released Monday, shows a stagnation in economic sentiment. While the index improved earlier this summer, it plateaued in July at -5, meaning more respondents expect the economy to worsen than improve.

Fear of job loss remains high, with over a quarter of employed Finns reporting increased concern in July. The anxiety is uneven: white-collar workers report easing fears, while employees see a deterioration. Students’ financial confidence is among the weakest in years, and regional divides persist, with western and capital-region residents faring better than those in the north and east, where forest industry cuts and the closed eastern border have deepened economic strain.

Consumer demand drives roughly half of Finland’s GDP, making household caution a critical factor in whether the country’s fledgling economic growth can gain momentum or will remain sluggish until unemployment fears subside.
