Kuopiorock isolates nearby densely populated island but residents remain satisfied

Residents of Rönö in Kuopio say the annual Kuopiorock festival brings their quiet island neighborhood its calmest weekend of the year.

The 500-person community on Rönö, a small island connected to central Kuopio by a single road, is cut off from public access during the festival, which is held at nearby Väinölänniemi. Entry is restricted to festival ticket holders and residents with special permits, eliminating extra foot traffic and noise.

“This is the quietest weekend of the year here,” said Tommi Tolvanen, who has lived on Rönö for more than 20 years. “There are no extra people walking around, no noise.”

Festival organizers have maintained good relations with the island’s residents through years of communication, including annual community meetings that once drew large crowds but have dwindled as trust grew.

“We kept holding them until only one person showed up,” said Allu Koskinen, Kuopiorock festival manager for 23 years. “We haven’t needed them for a couple of years now.”

The festival also limits parking and temporarily closes a popular public beach, though Koskinen said complaints about the beach closure have decreased as the closure period has been shortened. The beach reopens partially the morning after the festival ends.

Longtime resident Esko Korhonen said the festival has even reduced disturbances from boats and watercraft near the shore.

“There’s no more speedboats or jet skis racing around like before,” Korhonen said.
