Traktor driver admits to drink-driving in fatal Hemnes crash

The driver of a tractor involved in a fatal crash in northern Norway has admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol.

The admission comes from one of three suspects in the case, who now acknowledges he was both the owner and operator of the vehicle when it crashed on county road 7350 in Korgen, Hemnes municipality, late on Saturday.

According to a statement issued Thursday by defence lawyer John Erik Nygaard, the suspect chose to disclose the information in order to respect the deceased, the bereaved and the other parties involved.

The crash occurred during a private social gathering and resulted in the death of a man in his late 30s. Emergency services were alerted at 23:03 and arrived to find the tractor overturned. Police initially suspected five people were on board at the time of the crash but had not confirmed who was driving.

Investigators from Nordland police district have questioned all those involved and are examining whether alcohol or other substances contributed to the incident.
