Former minesweeper Pohjanmaa scrapped at Teijo shipyard

The former Finnish Navy minesweeper Pohjanmaa is being dismantled at the Teijo shipyard in Salo, Arctia announced on Thursday.

Arctia, which operated the vessel as a hydrographic survey ship for a decade, said no suitable alternative use could be found for the 30-year-old vessel after it was decommissioned by the Navy in 2013.

The 1,000-tonne ship was transferred to Millog Marine & Power’s Teijo yard for scrapping, where materials and reusable components will be recycled.

Between 2016 and 2026, Pohjanmaa conducted seabed mapping in the Baltic Sea, Barents Sea and North Sea under Arctia Meritaito’s flag.

The vessel first entered service with the Finnish Navy in 1984 as a training and flagship, later gaining prominence in 2011 when it participated in an EU anti-piracy operation off Somalia, escorting food convoys.
