The seabed east of the Faroese island of Nólsoy is being cleared of abandoned fishing gear under a project led by the environmental group Firum, its director Jóhanna Lava Køtlum announced on Tuesday.
The operation, conducted in partnership with the Faroese Coast Guard and Bakkafrost, is expected to take one week, Køtlum said. It follows a 2013 trial in which two rings were placed on the seabed to test the impact of trawling in the area, though no fish were ever introduced into the rings.
