The Faroese government and the Environment Agency have endorsed a draft proposal to introduce a beverage deposit system, with implementation set for 1 September 2026.

According to the draft regulation, the scheme will cover metal, plastic and glass containers ranging from 15 centilitres up to three litres, excluding milk. The Environment Agency will oversee the system, which will be financed by producers and importers under powers granted by the new legislation.

The draft regulation and accompanying legislation must still be formally approved by the government before taking effect.
