New collision in Virrat kills two, critically injures two children

Two adults from the Helsinki region died and two children were seriously injured when a passenger car collided with a garbage truck on Highway 66 in Virrat on Friday, police and rescue services said.

The family’s children, born in the 2000s, remain in intensive care at Tampere University Hospital, according to Detective Superintendent Kari Aaltio of Pirkanmaa Police.

The deceased were reported to be about 60 years old. Police are investigating the crash as a possible aggravated endangerment of traffic safety and negligent homicide, with two counts of aggravated assault also expected to be filed.

The driver of the passenger car has been identified as the suspect. The highway was closed for several hours after the collision.
