The 53-year-old Streymin Bridge requires extensive repairs and may remain closed for up to 15 years once work begins, according to engineers from the Netherlands.
Landsverk, the Faroese public works authority, will receive the final assessment on August 17 but has already confirmed the bridge’s poor condition. A total of 22 million Faroese kronur has been allocated for repair work this year, with an additional 23 million kronur budgeted for 2027. Sigurð Ó. Vang, head of the Planning Department at Landsverk, expects the total cost to reach 45 million kronur.
A specialized construction platform will be built to support the work, allowing regular vehicles, trucks, and trailers to use the bridge with a weight limit of 56 tons. Heavy transport vehicles will be restricted, and their access is not expected to resume in the future.
The Streymin Bridge has a limited remaining lifespan of possibly just 15 years, Vang said.
