Immigrant students in the Faroe Islands who have not completed primary education in Faroese and Danish are being denied entry to upper secondary school or Glasir vocational training, according to a report by Faroese broadcaster KVF.
Deirdre Hansen, a guidance counsellor at Kambsdalur Upper Secondary School, told KVF that some long-term immigrant residents who finished primary education abroad lack the required Faroese and Danish language exemptions. Without these, they cannot progress to upper secondary education.
Hansen noted that as more immigrants arrive, the education system must place greater emphasis on structured Faroese language instruction as a second language to prevent such barriers.
