Police issue fines after speeding races on Rømø beach
Danish police have issued fines to tourists for illegal racing on Lakolk Beach on the island of Rømø, according to a report by DR.
Vice police inspector Allan Dalager of South and North Jutland Police said officers had recently received multiple reports of drivers deliberately racing or performing high-speed doughnuts on the sand. On Tuesday, two tourists were each fined 1,000 kroner for intentional racing.
Dalager warned that such behaviour is both illegal and dangerous, noting the beach is crowded with visitors, including children and families. Police have increased patrols to deter the practice.
Drivers violating traffic rules on attentiveness risk fines, while those engaged in street racing face unconditional imprisonment and a minimum three-year driving ban.
The issue is not new: in July 2013, a 21-year-old man died after a car rolled during a race on Lakolk Beach. The driver was later sentenced to 18 months in prison, and the speed limit on the beach was reduced to 20 km/h.
Police will maintain heightened surveillance of the area in the coming period, Dalager said.
