Sweden’s Transport Administration has raised its alert level over concerns that extreme heat could damage railway infrastructure, affecting around 15 routes in Småland, state broadcaster SVT reports.

Officials warn that certain tracks are more vulnerable to high temperatures, increasing the risk of buckling or overhead line damage. Some sections will face speed restrictions or full closures, with possible changes as conditions evolve.

“Travellers should check with their rail operator and use their apps for updates. Journeys may take longer, and replacement buses could be in use. It’s always wise to bring extra water,” said Ola Malmberg, regional rail unit chief at the Transport Administration.
