More Swedes choosing train travel for European holidays
More Swedes are travelling abroad by train, according to figures compiled by SVT from Interrail, SJ and Snälltåget.
SJ reports a 26% increase in Interrail passes sold this year, while Snälltåget has sold 35% more international tickets. In 2024 and 2025, over 54,000 Swedes used Interrail passes, a 25% rise compared to 2023.
Train expert Susanna Elfors said the trend reflects both climate concerns and a desire for adventure. “When flight shaming peaked around 2019, many chose trains for the climate. But now I think it’s also about wanting an adventure,” she said.
Elfors added that train travel allows passengers to see more, making the journey part of the holiday. She noted that children under 12 travel free with Interrail, countering the perception that train travel is more expensive than budget flights.
Despite the growth, air travel remains dominant, accounting for 60% of foreign trips compared to 6% for trains, according to the travel barometer.
The most popular Interrail destinations for Swedes are Germany, France, Italy, Denmark and Switzerland.
Interrail is a rail pass allowing European residents to travel by train in 33 countries, with fares based on the number of travel days.
