Over a quarter of Danes travel without insurance

A new survey by Kantar Gallup shows that more than one in four Danes travel abroad for holiday without travel insurance, despite the financial and logistical risks if something goes wrong.

Anne Garde Slothuus, an insurance expert at Forsikringsoplysningen, warns that without coverage, travellers must handle emergencies and costs on their own. “There is no help available. You have to figure out how to get home safely and cover the expenses yourself,” she said.

Forsikringsoplysningen, run by the industry association for insurance and pension companies, provides impartial guidance on insurance matters. Depending on the policy, travel insurance can cover lost luggage, medical assistance, and other travel-related issues.

The survey also found that younger travellers are the most likely to forgo insurance, with one in three aged 18–29 travelling uninsured. Elias Witt Aadahl, a young traveller heading to Croatia without insurance, suggested cost may be a factor. “I think there’s a sense that if you don’t have as much to lose, you might skip it,” he said.

Slothuus cautions that the short-term savings may not justify the risk. “Right now, it costs money, but if things go wrong, the expenses could be far higher,” she said. She advises travellers to review their insurance needs and choose a policy that fits their budget and trip requirements.
