Electric cars in the Faroe Islands are heavier than conventional vehicles and cause more road wear, yet they pay significantly lower road taxes, reports Kringvarp Føroya.
Transport Minister Aksel V. Johannesen acknowledged the disparity in a written response to MP Steffan Klein Poulsen, who asked whether the government plans to equalise road tax rates for electric and conventional cars. Johannesen did not answer directly but stated that a comprehensive review of all vehicle taxation is necessary to ensure fairness, road durability, and alignment with energy and climate goals.
As of 1 July, the Faroe Islands had 3,433 electric cars out of a total of 28,489 passenger vehicles.
