The Suomipop festival in Jyväskylä is drawing 9,000–10,000 visitors daily to an event site nestled among apartment blocks, Yle reports. Security staff numbers exceed police requirements due to the unusual urban location.

The three-day festival forces the closure of Lutakonaukio square and its surroundings, disrupting daily routines for thousands of residents and requiring extensive detours. An entire residential block adjacent to the site is closed to non-residents for the duration.

Security chief Pekka Tuulaniemi said the festival employs more stewards than the 1:100 visitor ratio mandated by police. Additional stewards patrol outside the fenced area, where large crowds gather. A nearby lake also requires lifeguards to be on standby throughout the event.

Event director Anniina Havukainen of Nelonen Media Live said the festival’s integration into the cityscape demands careful traffic arrangements and clear signage. She noted that while initial closures may frustrate locals, feedback is largely positive, with some residents embracing the atmosphere from their balconies.

Tuulaniemi added that the 18+ age restriction simplifies crowd control, as it eliminates the need for separate enclosed areas for alcohol service.
