Hämeenlinna is replacing the last 300-meter cobblestone section of Turuntie with asphalt by September, Yle reports. The uneven surface has caused excessive vibrations for ambulances and public transport.

The city’s construction board approved the decision last June, prioritizing traffic safety, durability, and maintenance efficiency. While the roadway will be fully asphalted, the edges will retain cobblestones to preserve the street’s historical and aesthetic character.

The cobblestones, installed in the 1930s, have sunk over time, creating deep ruts. Removed stones will be stored at the city depot for reuse in other projects, such as pathways in Linnanpuisto park.

The road’s full renovation also includes updating street lighting, traffic control systems, and electrical infrastructure. Turuntie, a key route to Assi Hospital and a major public transport artery, has been a point of debate over whether to preserve its historic cobblestones or prioritize smoother travel.
