Oslo’s emergency room saw a sharp rise in injuries overnight as Norway’s 2-1 victory over Brazil in the World Cup sent 100,000 jubilant fans into the streets, Dagbladet reports.
Oslo University Hospital recorded 48 patients at its emergency clinic between midnight and 7 a.m. on Monday, a volume comparable to New Year’s Eve or Norway’s Constitution Day. Of these, 21 cases were directly linked to the match and subsequent celebrations, according to the hospital.
“For some patients, it is documented that the activity causing the injury was triggered by sheer euphoria,” said Anders Bayer, the hospital’s press officer.
Two injuries involved rowing, eleven were related to violence, and two stemmed from fireworks or pyrotechnics. Many patients were under the influence of alcohol, making it difficult to determine the exact number of football-related injuries, the hospital noted.
Police estimated that 100,000 people gathered in central Oslo following the match.
