Norway beats Brazil to reach World Cup quarter-finals
Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 in the World Cup round of 16 on Sunday, sparking mass celebrations across Oslo as hundreds of thousands of jubilant fans filled the streets.
Crowds gathered at the Royal Palace and along Karl Johans gate, with Crown Prince Haakon among the revellers. Supporters chanted, danced, and waved flags, with some losing their shoes in the crush, Dagbladet reported.
Erling Braut Haaland scored both of Norway’s goals in the match, played in New Jersey. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre praised the team’s tactical discipline and collective effort, calling the victory a historic achievement for Norwegian football.
“Beating Brazil sounds like a fairy tale, but this was the result of a great team performance,” Støre told NTB. “Today we had a giant in goal and a giant up front, and that made the difference.”
Haaland, speaking to TV 2, said he wished he could join the celebrations. “This is one of the craziest days in Norwegian history. Enjoy the moment—this is insane,” he said.
Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery called the quarter-final berth “one of the greatest sporting achievements in Norway’s history.” Norway will next face either England or Mexico in Miami on July 11.
