Norwegian MP Mirell Høyer-Berntsen of the Socialist Left Party (SV) is pushing for a ban on commercial AI glasses capable of covert filming and audio recording in public spaces, Dagbladet reports.

Høyer-Berntsen argues the devices—dubbed “perv glasses” in Norway—combine cameras, microphones, and AI in a form factor that makes unauthorized recording undetectable. She compares them to prescription-only medication, stating that such technology should not be freely available to private individuals.

“Imagine you’re at the beach and someone films you with a phone—you can ask them to stop and delete it. But with these glasses, you won’t even know you’re being recorded. How can you demand deletion if you don’t know it happened?” she said.

The MP is preparing a proposal for the Storting to regulate the glasses before they become widespread, though she acknowledges exceptions for assistive use by the visually impaired. She also criticizes Meta’s promotion of the devices through influencers like Kylie Jenner and luxury brands like Prada.

Justice Minister Astrid Aas-Hansen agrees on the risks but maintains that existing laws, including data protection and criminal codes, already cover potential abuses. She cites EU AI regulations as an additional safeguard but stresses the need to monitor technological developments closely.
