A proposed dignity reform would permit socially vulnerable drug users to retain small quantities of drugs for personal consumption without confiscation, according to a bill now under consultation by Social Minister Monika Rubin of the Moderate Party.

The measure targets users for whom daily drug possession is a necessity, aiming to break what advocates describe as a cycle of distress and crime. Ingelise Wenzel, chair of De Hjemløses Venner in Esbjerg, welcomed the proposal, calling it “one of the most sensible things in a long time.” She argued that confiscation often drives users to commit further crimes to sustain their addiction.

Karina Lorentzen, legal spokesperson for the Socialist People’s Party in South Jutland, suggested issuing ID cards to eligible users to help police distinguish them from others. Wenzel cautioned against broad legalization, emphasizing the need to avoid a “slippery slope.”

The reform stems from a January political agreement between the former government, the Socialist People’s Party, and the Conservative People’s Party, delayed by the general election and subsequent coalition talks.
