The Faroese parliamentary ombudsman has issued a serious reprimand to Almannaverkin, the national social services agency, for failing to provide adequate respite care to a 13-year-old boy with special needs.
The boy, who requires continuous support, was entitled to a respite care arrangement comparable to what he had previously received. However, three months after the ombudsman’s April reprimand, the agency has still not fulfilled its obligation.
Helena F. Jørmundsson, chair of the advocacy group Javni, called the situation “a matter of life,” emphasizing the urgency of the boy’s need for respite care near a hospital. The boy has since been moved to Sandur for respite, as his condition requires proximity to medical facilities.
Hjørdis S. Mortensen, director of Almannaverkin, declined to comment on the radio but stated that the agency is working to resolve the case in collaboration with relevant authorities and the boy’s parents. No final decision has yet been made.
