A Finnish court has issued an in-absentia arrest warrant for an Indonesian man in his 50s suspected of revealing state secrets in 2021, a crime classified as treason under Finnish law.

The Helsinki District Court granted the warrant on Monday at the request of the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI). According to Yle, the case is linked to the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Eurajoki.

Lead investigator Juha-Pekka Karkkola confirmed the suspect is an Indonesian citizen but declined to specify the exact nature of the allegations. He stated the investigation began in late 2023 and that the suspect remains at large. Karkkola would not assess the likelihood of the man being brought to Finland to face charges.

Under Finnish law, revealing classified information related to national security can carry a prison sentence of four months to four years. The suspect has no prior criminal record in Finland in the past decade, Yle reports.

Recent years have seen several cases in Finland involving allegations of leaking state secrets, including a military lawyer charged earlier this month and two journalists convicted last year for publishing classified material.
