Sweden and Poland have signed a 50 billion kronor (€4.5bn) agreement for the purchase of three A-26 submarines from Swedish defence firm Saab, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reports.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk announced the deal at a joint press conference on Monday. “With our combined capabilities, the Baltic Sea has never been this well defended,” Kristersson said.

The first submarine is scheduled for delivery in 2031. Until then, Poland will lease the Swedish navy’s HMS Södermanland to train Polish crews in Swedish submarine systems.

The two countries also launched the Baltic Sea Pact, a deepened security and defence cooperation aimed at combining their political, military, and defence industrial capabilities to strengthen European security and counter Russian threats.

Relations between Sweden and Poland have steadily deepened since the countries established a strategic partnership in late 2024.
