Jyväskylä’s downtown is split into two distinct areas, Upper Town and Lower Town, each with its own character, reports Yle.
The unofficial division is visible in the streetscape and atmosphere. Upper Town is known for its bohemian subculture, art, and small independent shops, while Lower Town is the hub of shopping centres, restaurants, and nightclubs.
Residents describe Upper Town as a cultural district shaped by history, home to protected university buildings and long-standing venues like Vakiopaine bar, where locals gather regularly. Lower Town, meanwhile, draws crowds to its commercial and nightlife offerings, though its rowdier reputation has sparked debate in recent years.
Some, like Harri Varpanen, prefer Upper Town for its relaxed vibe, while others, such as Helmi Laitiolampi and Liina Pajula, favour Lower Town’s energy. Many see the two areas as serving different purposes: practical errands in Lower Town, leisure in Upper Town.
