Runavík municipal council has granted Effo permission to build a large oil storage facility at Sandi in Søldarfjørður, the Faroese broadcaster KVF reports.

The site will be located on new landfill south of the pier in Søldarfjørður. The facility will consist of seven tanks, each 20.5 metres high with a diameter of about 20 metres, providing a total capacity of 20,000 cubic metres.

Effo will use the tanks to store gasoline, diesel, gas oil, and jet fuel. In addition to the tanks, the project includes tank enclosures, a pump house, a control valve house, and fire suppression systems.

The environmental agency has already approved the project’s environmental impact assessment. The fire and labour authority is still reviewing the fire safety plan, according to the municipality.

Effo previously announced it had signed a contract with Articon and Mest to construct the facility, calling it the largest investment in the company’s history. Construction is scheduled to begin in August, with the facility expected to be operational by the end of next year.
