The Faroe Islands are seeking expanded powers in foreign policy, while areas such as the constitution, currency, the royal family, the judicial system, the police, prosecution, and correctional services will remain under Danish jurisdiction. Foreign policy will be partially managed by Denmark.
This statement comes from the Union Party, which hosted a press conference earlier today under the theme “New Union – A Self-Governing Country within the Kingdom.”
The Union Party proposes that the framework for foreign policy should be broadened and formally established.
The entire press conference can be viewed and listened to on the Union Party’s Facebook page.
Two pillars of foreign policy are suggested: one specifically for the Faroe Islands and another that applies to the entire Kingdom.
Under the Faroe Islands-specific pillar, it suggests international and intergovernmental partnerships, fishing agreements, and trade treaties should be included. Additionally, it calls for decision-making power regarding defense policy matters affecting the islands.
To facilitate these expanded foreign policy powers, changes may be needed to the current parliamentary or governance system.
Bárður á Steig Nielsen chairs the Union Party.
