The EU Council has included the Faroe Islands in a document outlining its desired future cooperation with non-EU Western European countries, Faroese public broadcaster KVF reports.

Bárður á Steig Nielsen, the Faroese minister for foreign affairs and fisheries, said one reason may be the islands’ growing prominence in EU affairs, though he noted the geopolitical situation also plays a role.

The council’s document commends the Faroe Islands’ support for Ukraine and highlights their alignment with EU sanctions against Russia.

Other countries mentioned in the document include Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Andorra, San Marino, and Monaco.
