Unknown natural force destroys dance pavilion in Pöytyä
A sudden, unexplained natural force tore the outdoor roof off the Valasranta dance hall in Pöytyä, southwestern Finland, on Monday, Yle reports. The damage was isolated—only one terrace chair toppled over.
The hall’s owner, the Ylänee volunteer fire brigade, had gathered earlier to plan Midsummer bonfire preparations. Just 20 minutes after everyone left, an alarm sounded. No one was injured.
Heavy rain flooded the interior, warping the parquet floor. The financial impact is substantial, according to Laura Toivonen, chair of the fire brigade’s entertainment committee. Had the damage occurred after Midsummer, the association’s finances would have been more secure.
News of the incident spread quickly. Dancers across Finland offered time, tools, and expertise to restore the hall. One musician pledged to spend an entire month of summer leave helping.
The dance hall, built in 1968, had withstood severe weather before. The roof had even been reinforced against rain just days earlier. Yet, with no storm or wind reported, the cause remains a mystery.
