Nato will strengthen and modernise its nuclear capabilities, according to a statement from the alliance’s Nuclear Planning Group (NPG), as reported by Swedish public broadcaster SVT.
Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson (M), attending the group’s meeting alongside Nato’s defence minister summit in Brussels, said Russia’s escalation in this area necessitated a response.
“It is a way for Nato to secure peace and avoid nuclear blackmail,” Jonson said of the group’s statement.
The NPG, which includes all Nato members except France, last issued a public statement 17 years ago. However, increased Russian aggression, statements, and nuclear developments—such as a new missile believed to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads—have prompted Nato to act to maintain nuclear deterrence.
The group emphasised that strategic nuclear weapons remain the cornerstone of Nato’s security and deterrence. Members agreed to bolster capabilities by modernising weapons, reviewing planning, and adapting to the current security environment.
Nato members reaffirmed their commitment to sharing the responsibilities, risks, and burdens of nuclear deterrence through investment in required resources, capabilities, and forces, while demonstrating unity and resolve.
Jonson noted Sweden’s participation in NPG activities, including exercises with staff officers and Gripen aircraft, but clarified: “We have no need to host nuclear weapons on Swedish soil—and the Americans are aware of that.”
