Seagulls overrun Joensuu main library
Seagulls have taken over the roof of Joensuu’s main library this summer, with dozens or even over a hundred chicks nesting there, reports Yle.
The library’s white walls are now streaked with droppings, and staff have posted warnings after the birds began dive-bombing visitors and soiling them from above. Chicks have even wandered inside the building. The noise from the colony keeps nearby residents awake around the clock.
Library officials say the most intense period will come in the next two weeks, when fledglings leave the roof and adult gulls aggressively defend them. Clean-up of the façade is planned for autumn.
Previous deterrent attempts, including rubber snakes and spinning devices, have failed. Biologists suggest the birds are moving into cities as natural nesting islets in waterways grow over with vegetation. The library’s flat, elevated roof offers clear sightlines and protection from predators.
For now, staff are giving the gulls space to finish nesting, which typically ends after mid-July.
