Pelkosenniemi municipal council has removed Laura Lakso (Centre Party) from her positions as chair of the council’s executive board and as a board member, Yle reports.
The decision follows a temporary committee investigation into alleged trust issues, including communication difficulties and inappropriate conduct. Lakso denies the claims, stating her actions were based on oversight responsibilities.
Lakso, who received over a quarter of Pelkosenniemi’s votes in the 2025 municipal elections—the highest relative share in Finland—called the decision deeply saddening and confusing. She said the spring had been exceptionally difficult, marked by vague accusations.
A report cited conflicts, unclear roles, and disrupted meetings, with some interpreting her behavior as disrespectful or even threatening. The council’s own statement found no grounds for distrust, but the vote split evenly.
Timo Tossavainen (Centre Party), former deputy chair, was also removed due to legal requirements but was immediately re-elected as chair unanimously. He called the process burdensome for the municipality and emphasized restoring workplace peace.
Lakso said she has received widespread support from residents questioning the decision’s legitimacy.
