Driver suspected of attempting to hit Pride parade traffic controller
A driver is suspected of attempting to hit a traffic controller at the Manse Pride parade in Tampere on Saturday, according to event organisers.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Rongankatu and Aleksanterinkatu, where an outsider allegedly tried to drive into a traffic controller protecting the parade, Sinuiksi ry executive director Miia Koskela told Yle. The controller managed to evade the vehicle and defuse the situation, avoiding injury.
A police report has been filed, and Central Finland Police confirmed they are investigating the case as a possible endangerment of traffic safety.
Organisers initially reported that the event, which drew over 10,000 participants, proceeded relatively calmly. Koskela said she only learned of the incident on Monday.
Police are also investigating an attempted arson of a large rainbow banner on the wall of Tampere’s Old Church bell tower, believed to have occurred early Monday. The banner’s lower section was charred in several places.
Koskela condemned the acts, stating that hate crimes are always unacceptable but emphasised the importance of ensuring Pride events remain safe to attend. Security for Manse Pride had been planned in advance with authorities, including 50 security guards and 100 volunteers, an increase from previous years.
