A 15-year-old moped rider died in Lappeenranta last week after being struck from behind by a car driven by a young adult, despite the city’s spring and summer safety campaigns targeting moped use.
The city has intensified efforts to improve youth traffic safety this year, including roadside signs promoting moped safety, awareness of others, and positive attitudes, according to local youth services.
Following the fatal accident in the Mustola district, Lappeenranta’s youth services extended support, keeping the Lauritsala youth center open until midnight with crisis workers available. Youth services director Kimmo Hölkki reported high attendance among young people.
Hölkki emphasized that parents remain responsible for their children’s moped use, urging them to ensure the vehicles are legal and properly maintained. He warned that modified mopeds, which can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h, pose significant risks.
The city has also organized events such as the Punainen liitu campaign, which educated young drivers about reckless behavior, alongside online parent evenings and a moped workshop launched in May. Social media videos featuring youth perspectives on moped use have also been shared.
