Four stabbings in Helsinki public spaces within a week
Helsinki police are investigating four stabbings in public places within the past week, the latest occurring Monday afternoon at Pukinmäki station, Yle reports.
A man stabbed another man, who sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Police have detained a suspect in the case.
On Sunday afternoon, a person was stabbed in the torso near Sörnäinen metro station and hospitalized. Police arrested one suspect. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over ownership of an electric scooter.
In Vallila on Friday, a man was stabbed in the head and seriously injured. Police initially detained three suspects, one of whom remains in custody and will face a remand hearing on Tuesday. Authorities suspect the attack was linked to a debt-related dispute, with the victim and perpetrator known to each other.
In addition to these stabbings, a serious assault involving a bladed weapon occurred in Örskinuisto park in Malmi, leaving the victim with severe injuries requiring hospital treatment.
All cases are being investigated as attempted murder. Police have not confirmed whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the incidents.
Detective Inspector Tuomas Lindholm of the Helsinki Police Department noted the concentration of serious stabbings in a short period is unusual. While it is too early to confirm an overall increase in such crimes this summer, he expressed concern over the prevalence of bladed weapons, particularly among young people, warning of potentially severe consequences.
