Sunniva Hofstad, a 20-year-old from Trondheim, has become the first female Norwegian boxer to qualify for the Olympics. She will compete for the gold medal in the 75-kilogram middleweight category in Paris. “There’s no point in entering a tournament with any other goal,” she stated with a smile.

Hofstad has made waves in Norwegian boxing over the past few years, claiming a gold medal at the junior world championships and two at the European championships. She trains in a garage that has been converted into a boxing studio, a crucial space during the pandemic and continuing to be essential for her training. Despite her success, the financial costs of pursuing boxing are significant, and sponsorship opportunities have been limited. “My dad is probably my most important sponsor, but I hope to attract more significant sponsors in the future,” she shared.

There is a historical weight on Hofstad’s shoulders as she aims for Olympic glory; the only other Norwegian boxer to win Olympic gold did so in 1924, also in Paris. Hofstad achieved her Olympic qualification in March by knocking out Sweden’s Love Holgersson and is one of the two qualified Norwegian boxers heading to the games.

Boxing expert Anders Werner Øfsti expresses optimism for Hofstad’s chances, emphasizing her impressive strength, skills, and unique style. He notes that her toughest competition is expected to come from Canadian Tammara Thibeault, with whom Hofstad practiced ahead of the Olympics.

Training at B-30 club in Trondheim, Hofstad enjoys a supportive environment free from the toxic masculinity present in some other gyms. Although she has interests beyond boxing, such as sewing and spending time with family and friends, she eagerly anticipates her first match on July 31, where she plans to bring her unique style and determination to the ring.
