The northern Danish town of Løgstør will be protected against high water with a 76 million kroner project, according to a report by DR.

Løgstør, a small harbour town in North Jutland, has repeatedly suffered flooding when strong winds push water through the narrow strait of Limfjord. In 2005, residents were evacuated after a violent storm forced water into the town’s streets.

Vesthimmerland Municipality is one vote away from approving the project, which involves placing large granite blocks in the shipping channel to reduce high waves during storms, said mayor Per Bach Laursen. The blocks will also form a natural breakwater, creating a new marina for leisure boats.

Experts warn that the current flood defences cannot protect the town from the more extreme weather expected in the future. The municipal council is expected to approve the project at its next meeting, with work potentially starting this autumn.
